FAQ
FAQ about applying for a driving licence
Where can I apply for a driver's license?
If you are applying for a driving licence for the first time, you must first visit the relevant authority and submit an application to obtain a driving licence. Depending on the city or municipality, this can be the residents' registration office, the district authority or the road traffic office. The place where you apply for your driving licence depends on your first place of residence.
In Munich, the
"Fahrzeugzulassungs- und Fahrerlaubnisbehörde" is responsible for all matters concerning driving licences. If you live in the district of Munich, you can apply for your driving licence either at the
""""Führerscheinstelle München-Land" or at the town hall of your municipality.
If you live neither in the city of Munich nor in the district of Munich, you will need a permit from your municipality in order to take your driver's license training at DriveX. This is usually not a problem if you work, train or go to school in Munich.
How long does it take to apply for a driver's license?
The approval of the application usually takes between four and six weeks. This period may seem quite long, but you do not have to wait and be idle. The application must only be completed if you also want to take the test. You can therefore start your driving training with us well in advance, which we would strongly recommend.
Currently, however, the application may be delayed somewhat due to Corona restrictions.
What does it cost to apply for a driver's license?
The costs vary depending on the region.
In the urban area of Munich, applying for a driving licence costs €44.70 (+ €28.60 for class B96 or B197).
In the district of Munich €38.80 (without probationary period), €39.60 (with probationary period).
When can I apply for my driver's license?
You can start your driving licence training at the earliest six months before you reach the minimum age. Three months before reaching the minimum age you can take the theory test, one month before that the practical test.
What do I need to apply for a driver's license?
You can find out which documents you need to apply for a driver's license either on the respective pages for the different driver's license classes or further up on this page.
When do I have to apply for a new driving licence?
A few years ago, driver's licenses were valid for life. Of course, this was particularly convenient for the driver's license holder because he didn't have to worry about anything. On the other hand, after a few decades it also became increasingly difficult to identify the person as such - the driver's license photo was then, of course, by no means up to date. Since January 19, 2013, driver's licenses are only valid for 15 years. In good time before the expiration date, a new driver's license must be applied for at the responsible driver's license authority. By the way, the expiration date can be found on the front under number 4b. Of course, you do not have to take another test or complete any other test. The regular reissue of the driver's license is merely to ensure that the document is brought up to date again, also with regard to the photo and forgery protection. By the way, anyone who has an older driver's license is by no means spared from having to exchange it: Staggered according to the date of issue or year of birth, old driver's license documents also have to be renewed gradually.

How can I apply for an international driving licence?
In some countries outside the EU, an international driving licence is required. Here, too, a visit to the relevant driving licence office is unavoidable. In addition to the application, which you can obtain directly from the driving licence office, a biometric photo, a valid identity document and the current national or EU driving licence are also required here.
The costs are about 15-20 EUR. Unlike the EU driving licence, however, it is only valid for three years.
