Becoming a driving instructor - this is how it works

You must be at least 21 years old to register at a driving instructor college. The minimum age is based on the requirement that a student driving instructor must have been in possession of driving licence class B/BE for three years. Before you think about the costs of training as a driving instructor, decide whether you meet the minimum requirements. In addition to the entry age and the driving licence, you need a school leaving certificate. If you have completed your school career with the Abitur or Fachabitur, you will have no difficulty understanding the course contents during the training. During the eight-month training period at the driving instructor college, everything revolves around traffic and driving school teaching. In the basic course for class BE, you will be introduced to the technology of the driving school vehicle. You will also be immersed in legal theory and study the road traffic regulations in depth. Among other things, the subject of pedagogy is designed for dealing with the students you will be allowed to teach after the training. In this way, you learn to respond to your students in the right way. After an introductory month at the driving instructor college, you will have seven months of full-time training ahead of you. Once you have completed the eight months of training at the technical college, you will complete a four-month training internship at DriveX. After the basic training, you can complete supplementary courses for classes A, CE and DE. The costs for the training in the supplementary courses are between 2,400 and 3,500 euros per course. In principle, all persons over 21 years of age who have held a class B or BE driving licence for at least three years are suitable for the training.
